Sanawon likes to play songs in the key of S-A-D and M-A-D. Based in Chicago, Sanawon is made up of an interesting pedigree of pop, indie and punk. Jenny and Philip started the band as a two-piece in 2005, and David (related: Favorite Saints, Very Secretary, American Football) joined on in 2007. Jenny is mostly known as a cellist/keyboard/vox fill-in for punk rockers, having performed/recorded with Ben Weasel, Mike Park (Asian Man), Adam Pfahler (Jawbreaker), Smoking Popes (Asian Man), Lawrence Arms/Sundowner and many others. Philip was in a seminal legendary punk band in the ’90s called Small Unfriendly Rodents. Sanawon has toured nationally and Seoul, Korea as invited by KBTV and the city of Seoul.
Jenny is also the founder of the Asians In Rock tour, one of the only successful showcases of its kind that featured prominent Asian American songwriters, musicians and artists across the country (including Versus, From Monument to Masses, Scrabbel, Ida, Seam), from venues as large as Slim’s in San Francisco or the main stage of the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Knitting Factory in New York City, to various colleges and universities across the country. She continues to appear at colleges to speak about the importance of developing an authentic artist’s voice and the empowerment of the Asian woman’s identity.
Sanawon has released Tiny Airplanes (Suburban Home Records 2005), Bonfire Night (Ona Records 2007), and The Promise (Quote Unquote Records 2012).
